Hi! We’re Oso. We’re a brand-new start-up on a mission to build a completely novel way for consumers to access independent tradespeople and get great quality, guaranteed works at a fair and transparent price.
We’ve been beavering away for a year developing the business model and designing the software, and we’re now ready to build our dream and get it out into the market.
We’re searching for two mid/senior level backend NodeJS developers who are looking for their first or next start-up job. We’re completely greenfield, currently having no code base at all, and as such we have wide flexibility in our tech stack if you’ve got the right justifications.
Our CEO, Adam, is very much a technical founder. He started his career as a professional software engineer, and then moved his way across into the corporate side before founding a start-up in 2018, eventually leaving and holding the role of CTO in a hedge fund before starting Oso. This means he’s qualified to contribute where necessary, but ultimately doesn’t want to be writing code on a day-to-day basis. We want you to lead on the development of the platform and take ownership of the decisions.
We’re starting out as a very small team to get to market. There will be a total of 4 Developers (two backend, two front end), one UI/UX person, and the leadership team which consists of Adam (CEO) and Jake (Operations Director). We’re going to be completely upfront and honest with you and tell you right from the start that we have fairly tight timelines in which to get to market, so we’re looking for people who are not only willing to commit to fast paced, agile environment; but people who are excited by it. We think we’re building something really cool here, and when we share the full concept with you, we’re certain you’ll agree too.
As we said before, our tech stack is fairly flexible, but our initial architecture is based on:
- NodeJS (Backend framework)
- Postgres
- Redis
All running in Azure. We’ll have multiple external authentication frameworks and API’s to implement, and we’ve got plans to grow the platform & feature set far into the future.
As an early-stage start-up, we’re trying to offer fair salaries, but we know we can’t afford the absolute top money in the area for the skills we’re asking for. We’re close, but we’re not top dollar. What we do have however is a great options scheme enabling you to directly benefit from your contribution to the business.
We’ve all worked in companies with challenging cultures and difficult bosses, and we know it can be tough to identify the culture of a business before jumping in. That’s why we’ve tried to summarise our culture in a few bullet points to help you decide:
- We like the office because we think it helps us all engage with each other and develop new ideas, but we also know that working from home can really help with concentration. That’s why we’re operating alternating flexible weeks – one week 2 days in the office, and the next week 3.
- Having said that, we’re also very flexible, and genuinely embody a give & get ethos. Worked hard over the weekend to get something out? Leave early a couple of days next week, or have some time off in lieu! Want the afternoon off for a family event? Make it up some other time working late. Work should be a part of your life, not your whole life.
- We’re delivery focused. Sometimes we all have to be together to breed harmony and develop ideas and solutions. We believe it’s healthy to spend time with colleagues and that it helps build great products. However, when we’re in delivery mode and we all know what we’re doing, we are very much delivery focused. Prefer working late into the night and coming in late in the morning? No problem. Want to come in super early and leave earlier in the day? No problem. Whilst we’re all delivering as planned and agreed there’s a tonne of flexibility available.
- We’re driven. The leadership team are both incredibly driven people who never stop moving forward. We jump over hurdles and deal with problems quickly and effectively in order to get where we want to be. We want people who are excited to take on new challenges, learn new things, and build epic stuff.
- Finally, we’re open and transparent. We want our company to be an environment where everybody feels valued, and if they’re struggling can put their hand up without fear of it negatively impacting them. We’re not saying we’re a soft touch, but we’re very reasonable people who realise that employee health is company health.
If you’d like to be considered for this position, we’d love to hear from you! Please apply online and we’ll get back to you very soon!
